Down East

Maine

We were approached by a couple to reimagine a guest room (among other spaces) in their Maine shingle-style home built. Like so many summer homes, this coastal property is special as a result of its simplicity, there is lots of original woodwork throughout the home with very few cosmetic improvements made throughout the history of the house.

The owners have spent the last 20+ summers in this home and felt their guests needed an upgrade. To achieve this while remaining true to the features of the home, we layered textiles and used a color palette consistent with the rest of the house, browns, yellows, and cream primarily, with pops of blue. As with so many projects, we mixed in original furniture with new seamlessly. The new spindle bed and dresser are right at home with the antique desk and adjacent hutch. The draperies provide much-needed light blocking while retaining the view. Light-filtering woven blinds provide privacy for guests as others enjoy the outdoors.

We are especially proud of how this room seamlessly integrates with the rest of the home. We took advantage of the magnificent light that comes in off the ocean and deliberately layered serene colors and patterns that create a quintessentially “Maine” space for guests to enjoy for decades to come.
